The Mormon Dilemma (Don't Worry It's a Basketball Article)

The Mormon Dilemma (Don’t Worry It’s a Basketball Article)

Written by an unbiased fan: Colton V. Thompson

For years there has been a hate and rivalry, (recently renewed) between BYU and Utah State. Cougar fans will deny this. The objective? To find out why BYU is in denial.

But Aren’t You Biased? No. Allow myself to give a brief background of……myself. (Austin Powers bit) Being an Aggie runs in my blood. My father graduated from the fine institution of Utah State University. Cousins have excelled here. Brothers have attended for a plethora of years. (Never graduating) However, my roots are actually at the base of a BYU tree. In the glory years, my grandfather cheered for a Lavell Edwards ran football dynasty. My own father used to claim BYU as his “favorite team.” Currently, many well respected family members and friends “Bleed Blue,” and give Brigham Young a fine name. Let’s analyze these two schools and why such a rivalry exists.

Why BYU Hates Utah State: The “Y” faithful like to dub Utah State their “Little Brother.” Many fans enjoy pretending that USU is not a “rival,” and that they simply don’t care about the Aggies. The Cougars view students in Logan as rejects. “They weren’t accepted into the Lord’s School,” one Provo lover commented, “so they settled for Utah State.” While trying to maintain a clean, well-polished image, BYU hates the open blaspheme of USU. Students in Cache Valley sin; living in co-ed dorms, drinking soda pop, and energy drinks. They sometimes miss their Priesthood meetings, grow stubble, and use the word “Hell” when not speaking of the fiery inferno where Satan lives. The previous few sentences were a bit “overboard sarcastic,” but in all seriousness, Aggie fans are rowdy. A true blue Aggie friend of mine attended a basketball game at the Marriot Center in the heart of the Cougar Student Body. Was he beaten? The opposite. This old boy was welcomed, and made a friend. On the contrary, a USU student attended last Friday’s anticipated basketball game at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, and boldly stood in the Aggie Student Section (cleverly dubbed “The hUrd”) wearing a grey Brigham Young University Cougars T-shirt. Was he beaten? Nearly. The entire stadium joined in chants such as “Kick him out,” “Stuuuupid,” and “Traitor.” The poor sap was heckled all game. The height of embarrassment for Utah State was reached when a portly, out of shape, balding 25 year old student wobbled up the steps (huffing and puffing), with a bright red face. As tears almost came from his eyes he yelled “You don’t deserve to be here!!!” “You are an ******* Trader!” I am no BYU advocate, but I was completely bothered as an Aggie when Fatso thought it was his moral obligation to yell obscenities at some BYU geek. The razzing became so bad, security had to talk to the young man and see if he wanted to move for his own safety.

Let’s not get confused. The chants were great. The heckling was welcomed. The anger from “Heathco” was a bit extreme. Yell at the players, leave the fans alone. At no time should a spectator feel as if they are not safe. Its’ guys like the Aggie Extremist who influence BYU fans to dislike Aggie fans.

Cougar faithful may also dislike the Ag because of their athletes. Football players are recruited from California, Texas, and Florida. Many USU athletes are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Certainly this rubs BYU the wrong way. While the Coug cheer on returned missionaries such as Jimmer Fredette, Charles Abouo, Brandon Davies, and Jim McMahon; (Oh…wait) Heathen Aggies are rooting for Jaycee Carroll, Tyler Newbold, and Brady Jardine. Good heavens, I want to remain in the middle of the road with this article, but I am struggling to do so. Ok, bottomline: Aggie fans can be too raunchy, loud, annoying, and sometimes downright mean. Some Cougar fans have complained that USU students “forget their values when cheering.” Good point. There are moron Ag fans who take heckling to an extreme; they don’t know anything about a sport, are whiny, and go overboard. These members of the hUrd give the rest of us a bad name.

Why Utah State Hates BYU: I’m salivating. Just kidding. But seriously. Bronco Mendenhall. Jimmer Fredette. Honor Code. Max Hall. Self-Righteous. Arrogant. Max Hall. “More Holier Than Thou.” Judgmental. Max Hall.

I need to share a disclaimer: Not all BYU athletes or fans are the way I will portray them to be. The Kamauu family, Jake Webber, Trevor Feusner, and many of my relatives are sincere followers of the “Y.” Let it be known that this is a generalization; and the views expressed are not necessarily my own, but those of the Aggie Student Body.

The things shared in the opening paragraph only name a few. Most USU advocates feel they are judged by BYU students. The dweebs from “Happy Valley” come off as snobbish. “When you're doing what's right on and off the field, I think the Lord steps in and plays a part; magic happens.” –Austin Collie

Ignorance. Any Mormon outside of Utah is raised to enjoy BYU. All the little deacons cannot wait to fill out their application to Brigham Young. Where else could one go to find an eternal companion? It bothers many that “Heber” who was raised in Indiana, wears glasses, is a diehard member of the Chess Club, has never played an organized sport, proudly flaunts his “Band of Brothers” BYU Football shirt and talks smack to opposing schools. BYU fans are BYU fans because they don’t know any better. “I’m Mormon, I should like BYU. How about that Steve Young? ….And Danny Ainge??? They were great!” (The author wants to make jokes about Harvey Unga and Brandon Davies but will not stoop to that level. I think it silly that so many constantly ridicule and mock Davies for “porking” out of wedlock. “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”) I’ve had the most unintelligent athletic conversations of my adult life with avid BYU fans who know nothing about football or basketball. I’ll leave it at that.

Ignorance. (Again) While sitting in JCOM 1500, I overheard a conversation about the upcoming basketball game. “This is a big game, right?” said a happy USU female student. “It’s big for Utah State, but not for BYU,” replied the 5’4 BYU cheering jabroni. I wanted to turn around and pop him in the jaw. I’ve heard over and over and over and over how BYU does not view the Ag as a rival! (Check Isaac Wood’s Facebook Status Updates) Incredible! The Provo Happy Clan mounts a 4th quarter come from behind football victory against the lowly Aggies, and they ACT AS IF THEY WON THE NATIONAL TITLE. Pandemonium. Utter Chaos. Brigham Young students knocking over security guards, storming, rushing, clawing, jumping, singing, yelling, laughing, celebrating. You would have thought the Millenium was here. As an Aggie fan sitting stunned in the stands, (Nice prevent defense Gary) I wasn’t sure what brought my 205 lb. (“In your bra!”) frame more shock: The fact that USU blew yet another 4th quarter lead, this one in the final 50 seconds….or the way the Cougar Elite were acting. I was embarrassed as a Mormon and a football fan. Here’s a group of pompous pricks who treat us as their “kid brother,” and act as if they are leagues above us, swinging from the jumbo-tron, and tearing down goal posts. If you expected to beat us, then don’t rush the field. Some Coug argue that Aggie fans did the same thing the year before. OF COURSE we did! We were a terrible football squad, who hadn’t beaten BYU in years! The game was on ESPN! Brigham Young was a 20 point favorite!

This article is more meant for basketball anyway. BYU has been a superior football program, and any Cougar follower will let you know about it….referencing games, coaches, and players from the 1980’s. However, that will soon change…as Utah State is now the better football team. This isn’t proven, but if 10 games were played between the Ag and Coug….the Ag would win 7 of them. Not only are we a basketball rival, but now football.

Anyway, back to hoops. Those who “Bleed Blue” in Utah Valley swear (not literally of course) up and down that their program is better. “You got Jimmered!” “NCAA tournament victories!” Screw you. Over the past 11 meetings, the Aggies are 6-5 against BYU. That’s not a rivalry? Eight of the games were decided by 6 points or less. When Cougar Crazies mention their basketball program being better, it makes me sick. Recently, we are better. “You lost in the 1st round!” Cougar Alum Parley P. Benson remarks. BYU would have lost to Kansas State too. The Aggies constantly earning a 12 seed has nothing to do with BYU being “better,” but everything to do with the scheduling of Stew Morrill. Don’t get me started on that. We are a rival whether you like it or not. Get over it. Stop making excuses as to the reason you lost. Don’t fall back on “Our program is better.” The next 10 years will prove my point.

Are We Done Yet? Utah State fans can be stupid. Threatening fans, creating hypocritical chants, and being blatantly nasty are a few things the student body should work on. BYU fans are much worse.

The Dating Game

The Dating Game

An in depth look at the struggles and problems of the Utah Dating Game

Written by Colton V. Thompson (inexperienced on the subject matter)

Foreword: It Can Be Written! The article analyzing and pointing the finger of blame towards young single females may finally be written (By written, we mean published as a “Facebook” note that will be read by 7 people). The natural man inside of me had wishes to vent, judge, and critique the “dating game” months ago, but there was one glaring problem. I was single. If this column were to be written by a single male, (such as I was) it would hold no value. The wrath of many would come down upon the author, and he would come off as a bitter, selfish, jabroni who is angry that girls don’t give him the time of day. The writer would go wild for a few pages on the problems with girls and their time management, only to be viewed as a “no gamed” sorry loser. Yes, this reason alone forced me to be patient, and save my meaningless thoughts and judgments until I my “facebook status” no longer read “single.”

So, why can it be written? Well, I am no longer that single, bitter, dateless fubash. The fact that the prettiest girl on campus calls me her boyfriend gives this author some credibility. Dating Nicole Whitbeck allows me to basically write anything I want, and it has to be viewed as fact. Instead of writing out of spite, I now simply write for the enjoyment of it. I now write to give other males hope of dating a girl out of their league. I now write to show the world (7 facebook readers) the problems of the ridiculous Utah Dating Game. The intent of this “note” is not too call former flings out, or express my hate for them. No, I am very grateful for my experiences with all girls who attend Utah State University, but someone needs to let them know how the real world works.

My credentials, you ask? Well, really I have none. I have however shot for the stars in my dating experiences. This is my advice to all men: Don’t lower your standards. Swing for the fences. You may be rejected, verbally abused, and embarrassed numerous times, but eventually you’ll end up with a girl who is too good for you, just as I have. In 9 months time I have pursued campus hotties Holly Godfrey, Tara Lemon, Kinsey Bals, Taylor Perry, Cassie Campbell, Jesi Gurney, Kelli Reese, Olivia Racker, and Sylvia Draper. Off campus legends have included Cassidy Fitt, Tawny Bryan, and Elisa Marie Lewis. Have I had success with, and gone on dates with these girls? Sure, but they didn’t really pan out. You may think my pride should forever be ruined, but think again? Aim high, and you will hit high….eventually.

Also, it should be known that this essay refers to girls who actually have some interest in the guy. This is not a writer being angry because a girl does not show interest in him or his friends, because that is natural. Some men are creeps/freaks, and girls need to behave in certain ways to get away from them. No, every instance in these paragraphs deals with the assumption that the girls have some (if only a little) interest in the individual of the opposite gender.

Now, since this paper’s objective is not to show the point that my girlfriend should and could be a supermodel, let’s get to the meat of it.

The Problems

Time Management: Some* say that you either have to serve a full time mission for the LDS church, or be a man to understand how to manage time. I will not share my views on the previous statement, but I will say that girls are terrible at it. A young single male will manage, sacrifice, and organize time to go on a date, “hang” with a girl, or drop by for a visit. A young single female will do homework, sleep, and attend class. It seems as if girls forget that guys are enrolled in school as well. Sometimes females forget that boys have jobs, and need to sleep, study, and do homework…just as girls do. The only difference is this: Guys manage time better than girls. I once was trying to set a date with a girl who had genuine interest. (If girls in Utah don’t have interest, they do not return your calls, texts, or talk to you…heaven forbid you remain friends). This particular individual claimed to be busy for 2 weeks straight. I asked her what she had going on Tuesday. Frustrated she replied: “I have class Tuesday, and I need to return a DVD to my friend in Providence!” Now let’s get this straight. Eight hours will be subtracted, because girls MUST sleep for that period of time. So, you’re expecting 3 classes and one trip to providence to take 16 hours? Girls struggle with time. The female will argue that they value school, studying, and homework more than the male, but that is false. Many friends of mine date 3 times a week and still record phenomenal grades. A good buddy of mine tells the story of a girl who could not “hang out” on a Wednesday night, because she had homework. The evening runs from 4 pm-1 am (3 am for men). That is a time gap of 9 hours, yet this girl could not find 1 hour to get some hot chocolate? Play some ping pong? Go on a walk? Grab some dinner? Watch 2 episodes of Seinfeld? Talk? If you do that much homework, especially as a freshman, you have some problems. You may be working a little too hard to pass psychology, sociology, English 1010, and math 900.

*By “some” the author means himself

Maybe men should take a little blame. If I ask to do something with a girl, it could be taken as a date, get together, hang out, etc. Girls have told me to specify, and I agree. However, if it’s not a set date, (such as a concert, jazz game, movie, mini-golf, or any event in which the boy has tickets to) then I just want to spend time with you. If you tell me you would gladly get together on a weekday evening, only to later bail because you have to complete an algebra worksheet; that is a potential issue. I am not asking you to be sealed to me for eternity, but rather “hang out.” (Dating is better than hanging out, but if the evening is too booked for a date, fall back to “hanging out”). Studies have shown that the best amount of time to study is 50 minutes. Anything after that period of time is nearly ineffective. Everyone needs breaks. Can we just sit and talk? Make some treats? Play a game of HORSE? ANYTHING? A pal of mine had plans to get together with a girl who he had dated on and off. Their date was set for 8 pm on Thursday night, over Christmas break. She texted him at 6:30 PM and broke the bad news. “I had to work a double shift and am really tired! I don’t think I feel like going out tonight. Can we do something a different night?” It is Christmas BREAK! It’s 8 pm. We understand you don’t want to go out on a date….then don’t! Let the poor sap come to your house and you can kick it. Relax together. Watch TV. Rent a movie. Bake brownies. Play cards. It doesn’t HAVE to be a date, but don’t ruin his night at 6:30 by telling him you are too tired to see him…and then watch TV with your roommates for the remainder of the night. The following is ironic: Female X has interest in Male X. Male X wants to get together with Female X. Although Female X would like to spend time with him, she just can’t quite figure out how to make it work. After all, she does need to write a 1 page paper, eat dinner, shower, and clean her room that evening. She tells Male X that they can do something another time. Later, random boys (who have no shame) go to Female X’s residence uninvited. They stay, play games, bake brownies and have a glorious evening, simply because they “dropped by.” Why are they rewarded for being morons, yet Male X, who had the courtesy to ask was left in the dark?

By the way, let me slip in props to Little Carly Barker, a girl who went on dates with me at one time. She had a social life that was full, 15 credits, and tough classes…yet somehow was very available to hang out. Learn a lesson from Little Carly.

Let’s conclude this section with a few random thoughts. Men place dating, and girls higher on their priority list than the opposite sex does. My friends will study during the day, finish homework, and work their schedules so that they CAN make time to do things with girls. Girls will make time to study and have “gals night out.” The events of these parties include painting each others’ nails, and talking about their relationship struggles. Here is a hypothetical situation: It’s Monday evening. Heber has a test in the morning at 9 a.m. He feels fairly prepared, having studied for 2 hours the past few days. Nothing is shaking on Monday, so Heber decides to hit the sack early, around Midnight. At 2 a.m, homeboy’s cell phone vibrated, and a text message is received from the girl of his liking. She texts: “Hey! If you’re still awake come by for a little while! I am sooooo bored. I can’t sleep!” Now, Heber (representing every normal male in Logan, and maybe on the planet) does not hesitate one millisecond before throwing on his sweats and going to homegirl’s apartment. Keep in mind, it is not his girlfriend, but a friend who he has taken on a few dates. Let’s reverse the scenario. If Heber texted (We’ll call her Sally) Sally at 2 a.m. on the eve before an exam, she will promptly reject him, or never speak to him again for being a pervert and wanting a piece.

The No Friend Clause: At Utah State University, it’s all or nothing. If two people go on a date, and sparks don’t immediately fly, it’s over. The spirit didn’t tell Jane to marry John, so she is writing him off. Why is this the case? My roommate’s girlfriend (can I call her that, Staley?) is a sweet soul and constantly looks out for me. Two months ago, she mentioned that there was a girl in her ward who I would love. “She is tan, has blonde hair, and long legs!” (Does she think I am shallow?) This friend, Alleesa, proceeded to give me Blondie’s (Allison Huntsman) number, and we went out one night. Fun was had, but like any first date, it was hard for either of us to completely be ourselves. Neither one of us came away in love with the other, but it seemed ok to try and get together another time. She replied to a text a few days later, and expressed interest in “hanging” the following week. Since that day, I have never heard from her again. Later, Alleesa asked her how things were going with me and her. She replied: “Things just fizzled out.” …………..Things fizzled out because she stopped talking to me. Could I have dated this girl? No. Could we have been great friends? Sure.

Why can’t more girls be like Angela Helsten? At a typical Logan party, (lots of people with red plastic cups drinking soda or water standing around talking, with music in the background and a few people dancing) an outgoing, non-bashful girl tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Have I met you?” We talked for a moment, I grabbed her phone number and we’ve been great friends since. Did we get romantically involved? No, but why can’t we be friends? My advice for both genders is this: Assuming you are physically attracted to each other, give the person a fair chance. This sounds cheesy and cliché, but you’d be surprised. Go on at least 2 dates with the person, and if it doesn’t work out…don’t write them off! Try to continue a friendship! I’ve seen many instances in which a girl stops talking to a boy after one date because she THINKS she doesn’t like him. After a few run ins at campus parties, said female realizes she may have feelings for the boy! By this time however, the boy has moved on.

Everyone is the Same: Anywhere outside of the great state of Utah (which I am fond of….the landscape and scenery anyway), you can find diversity. Dating is fun because you meet so many different types of humans. Also, it’s rewarding when you find someone who is a lot like you, possessing the same standards, morals, beliefs, and interests. In Logan, everyone has the same standards, morals, beliefs, and interests, so finding that person means nothing. If Sally and Bob don’t click too well on the first date…big deal…Sally moves on to some other guy. Now, there are a few different types of guys in Cache Valley. Hippies, Rednecks, Out of Town Normals, (I am fond of this group), and those who wish high school never ended. Girls don’t have too much to choose from (lack of ethnic diversity and culture), but for some reason they lean towards the latter of the previous groups. The most gorgeous females will constantly be seen with the Chief who wears a flat-billed backwards hat, and has a lift-kit on his truck. Try dating someone who didn’t go to Bear River or Fremont, and you will be happy.

My Friends Aren’t Your Friends: Here’s my favorite. Richard and Jane have gone on a few dates, and they are in the stage between friendship and a relationship. They enjoy each other’s company and like to be together. Richard asks Jane what her plans are for Friday, on Friday. (He asks on Friday) She isn’t sure, but doesn’t commit to do something with him. She gets a hold of him later, and says: “Hey, I think I’m going to hang out with my friends. Have a good night!” I’m going to take a minute to calm down. Nothing gets my blood boiling more than this situation. If she has another date, then tell vulnerable Dick (Richard) before 8 pm, so his night isn’t ruined. If you really are hanging out with friends, then INVITE Rich along! If it’s a designated girl’s night out, fine, that’s understandable. However, tell Dick before 8 at night. Don’t ruin his evening, let him make other plans. Why are your friends not my friends? If you are with a few girls, and it’s not a “girls night,” tell Richard to grab a couple guys and you can all get together. It doesn’t have to be limited to one guy and all of the girls…and friends of Rich would gladly come along if they know there are other girls present.

This very thing happened to Campus Legend Kyle Hardy. He hails from South Jordan, and was semi-pursuing a gal from his hometown. Naturally, Hardy doesn’t make it to SoJo very often, so when he does, this girl should be able to see him. Although she had called him, texted him, and expressed interest in getting together, it constantly never happened. When Hardy asked if she wanted to watch General Conference in April, she responded 3 hours later, “Sorry, I’m going to watch it with some friends!” Hardy hasn’t spoken to her since.

Random Stories: I had gone on 3 or 4 dates with the dream from my institute class. Outside of dating, we had watched a few jazz games, and “hung out” a time or two. At the library, we made eye contact and waved while we were in separate study groups. Five minutes later, I received a text. “Hey, are you still in the library?” Indeed I was, but couldn’t leave my study session. She went onto say that she wanted to say “hi,” but I replied too late and she had left. I texted a few more times, and asked to see her on Thursday night (not a date, because that would require a phone call). The reply? “I can’t this week. Sorry!” First of all, I didn’t ask about the week, my inquiry regarded one night. Secondly, you don’t have one free hour over the next 5 days? She went on to tell me how busy she would be the next 2 weeks as well. (Granted she is on the tennis team) Normally, these clues would lead me to believe that she would not like to pursue any type of relationship…I can take a hint. However, she went out of her way to make first contact. I planned to not talk to her for 3 weeks, but a few days later, she got a hold of me again. I received a text asking if the Jazz won the previous evening. (Information that could be found anywhere) She also asked about Mardi Gras, and insisted that I find her there. Now my head was spinning. Long story short, (you say: “too late”) we remain friendly towards each other, as I took the plunge into “relationship status” with a different girl. The point of the previous story is to portray the complexity of girls. Why the confusion? Actually, that same night, she and a friend initiated a conversation, asking us what our plans were after the dance. We weren’t sure, but gave a friendly invite to make a Wal-Mart drink run, and go from there. She replied, “I just drank water, so that wouldn’t be very good.” I left and went over to my current girlfriend’s apartment to hang out. She wanted to watch a movie, and although I had seen the film of her choice, I didn’t say “I just watched this movie, so that wouldn’t be very good.”

Recently my esteemed colleague and good friend Steven Pontius had somewhat of a fling. A mutual gal pal of ours brought a friend from Layton to visit. This friend and Steve seemed to hit it off, and the flirting went well. They texted often, and cuddled a few times while she was in Logan. They continued to talk, text, and flirt. A week later, he drove to Ogden to take her on a date. At the end of the night, he gave her a friendly kiss goodnight. She hasn’t forgiven him since. Here’s a sweet girl who had put out every sign that she had interest in poor little Steven, and she seems appalled when he makes a move. Constant confusion.

My brother and his wife didn’t start off so hot. (Pre-marriage) They were set up through a mutual friend to enjoy a “blind” date. (Pictures had been seen) Time and time again, dates were set, and dates were broke. According to Landon Thompson, it was like pulling teeth to get her to commit to a date. She seemed to always be busy. She wouldn’t return calls. She wouldn’t reply via text. A frustrated Landon wrote her off, only to find that 2 weeks later he had a text message from her. She was able to get together and the rest is history. Brittany (his wife) was playing the dating game, and in this case it worked out. In most it doesn’t.

Treat A Girl Like Dirt, She’ll Stick to You Like Mud (Conclusion): The nicer, cornier, charitable you are to girls, the farther away they stay from you. Ok, that might not be entirely true, but pretty girls date guys who treat them poorly.

Let’s conclude. I need to give a shout out to all of my friends and colleagues, but especially Jace Thompson. Many lunches have been had at Juniper Takeout, Chili’s, and Texas Roadhouse, where we do nothing but talk about the opposite sex, and the confusion that they bring. Jace had the privilege of being involved in “the game” for 6 years at Utah State. He usually refused to play, and superficial girl after superficial girl sifted through. Thompson has since become a master, and an absolute genius. The inspiration for this article derives mainly from him. He knows when to call, what to say, how to date, when to text, what to text, and anything of the like. Unfortunately, it takes 6 years to learn the game…so don’t play it.

These words have not been written to “get back” at anyone, or to call out girls. I admire them, respect them, and look forward to loving one forever someday. There certainly are many weird boys who make some of the female tactics necessary. This isn’t a “shot” at the female population, but rather an analytical view of my observations. Boys: Keep your heads up. Girls: Stop pretending to be so busy. I’m out.

A Tune That has Been "Jazzed" Out

A TUNE THAT HAS BEEN JAZZED OUT

An analysis of the downfall of the Utah Jazz

Written by an unqualified, uncertified Colton Thompson

May I Have Your Attention Please? Will the real person to blame please stand up? In only 4 months’ time, the only professional sports franchise that the state of Utah has ever seen…has bottomed out. This was made official when the lowly Wizards of Washington doubled their total number of road victories last night in Salt Lake City. The squadron that once ran smoothly under the direction of Coach Jerry Sloan, has officially embarrassed itself. Recently, one local fan from Logan nearly fell off his chair while surfing stubhub.com, as he noticed tickets for home games in SLC were going for 79 cents. The uncharacteristic play of late has left many fans bewildered, buffaloed, puzzled, confused, and devastated. Overall, the emotion of Jazz fans has best been summarized by Jack Raymond (The Jackel), with his spot on question: “What the F is the malfunction?” That, Jackel, is what we wish to answer.

The Glory Days: Things looked bright during the offseason of 2010. The buzz could be heard everywhere and anywhere when upper management signed big man Al Jefferson. Butler University standout guard Gordon Heyward would be showing off his skills in front of a packed house each night. Deron Williams had worked harder than ever, and was determined to bring a title to Utah. Nothing could stop the Jazz…or so it seemed. The boys in green and purple owned exhibition play of the 2010-11 year, coasting to a record of 8-0 in preseason. In December, the club had one of the top 5 records in the NBA, and sat comfortably with a 2nd seed in the Western Conference. Day would turn into night however, as injuries, locker-room contention, and terrible 1st quarter performances plagued the Jazz. Sure, followers of the team were worried, but fans remained optimistic. “We’re just in a rut,” sports radio DJ’s yapped. “We’ll bounce out of it.” Other faithful followers remarked positively, “Wait ‘til Memo comes back. The Lakers and Spurs will be quivering then.” No one could have predicted what would happen next. Instead of “bouncing back,” or making other NBA teams “quiver,” the Utah Jazz organization took a turn for the worse, in what was described by one *9 yr. old boy as, “the worst day of my life.”

“I feel it is time to move on.” One of the greatest coaches the game has ever seen stepped down on February 10, 2011. Controversy arose as many sources blamed Deron Williams for running the Old Man out of town. I am not one to speculate but I will say the following: If Kevin O’Connor was given an ultimatum regarding “Sloan or D-Will,” he could not have made a more horrific decision than what he did. Losing a legendary coach to satisfy your pre-Madonna superstar will leave you hurting 99 times out of 100. The Jazz were no exception. Due to the personal connection and emotions the author has tied with Coach Sloan, nothing further will be discussed about the resignation.

*Of course by 9 yr. old boy, the author means himself

What the Problem Is? I’ll tell you what the problem is. Poor decision making by management, terrible coaching, and horrible players. Let’s dig in.

Management Boners: People will always question individuals who hold positions of power, trust, and wealth. This Guy (with thumbs pointing at me) is no exception. First of all, let me issue a disclaimer. I am not sure if the idiot is one of the Miller brothers, or Kevin O’Connor, but whoever it is need never work in professional sports again. The boys in blue (blue back then) were one round away from the NBA finals THREE years ago. The team was young. They were spry. They had upside. They had potential. Where the hell did it go? Ask me how many players from the 2007-2008 roster remain with the Jazz as of today. Please, ask me. Four. Four players from only 3 years ago remain on the team. This is from a 15 man roster, not a 12, mind you. Paul Millsap, (quality) Andrei Kirilenko (overpaid, but quality), Mehmet Okur (injury stricken), and Ronnie Price, (one of the worst basketball players to ever play the game) remain. Who have the big wigs let go? Carlos Boozer, Deron Williams, Wesley Matthews, Ronnie Brewer, Kyle Korver, Jerry Sloan, and Dee Brown to name a few. (I’ll take Dee Brown over Ronnie Price any day of the week) The Utah Jazz effectively lost an All-Star Team to let the program be run by C.J. Miles and crew. I wouldn’t let C.J. Miles start on my church-ball team, but somehow he is Utah’s “Golden Child.”

The Dark Knight (Of Demise): Tyrone Corbin is awful. Some were giddy to see a young guy with zero head coaching experience take over. In fact, Kevin O’Connor was so excited that he decided to sign Corbin to a contract through 2013. Wait, what? We SIGN a head coach who hasn’t proven that he can win a junior high game, to run the franchise? My 6 yr. old nephew could make a better decision than that. Sure, some argue that the club needed a change. “It was time for Jerry to go,” optimists raved. “Corbin connects well with the players,” others agreed. Let us not doubt that Tyrone is a stand-up guy, full of cheer, and that he possesses great people skills. I’m sure he does. That doesn’t mean he should be in charge of the team through 2013 without ever proving himself as a coach. The more I write about the subject, the more outraged I become. Corbin has no offensive game plan, heaven knows what his defensive scheme is, he cannot close games, and do not get me started on his substitution process. Since taking the reins as the “Sideline General,” Corbin has posted a record of 5-16. Yes, you read that correctly, and no, it isn’t a typo. Michelle Thompson, my mother (who has never dribbled a basketball) could lead a NBA team to a record of 5 wins and 16 losses. Just for fun, let’s go over his substitution errors. Earl Watson plays almost as much as Devin Harris (we will evaluate Earl’s process later on), Derrick Favors plays 15 minutes a game, and C.J. Miles is on the floor for 42 more minutes than he should be. The run-down goes like this: Watson should give Harris a spell if, and only if, Harris is so tired he can no longer function. Earl Watson would have been cut from my high school basketball team. Next, every time Favors steps onto the court, great things happen. Dunks, blocks, lay-ups, free-throws, and rebounds. We give this kid 15 minutes a game? Play the young fella as much as possible, without cutting too many minutes from Big Al, and workhorse Paul Millsap. Heaven forbid the Jazz experiment with a lineup that consists of Jefferson, Favors AND Millsap playing at the same time! We never win a game, but we couldn’t try a lineup like that, could we? There would be too much to lose. It’s a gamble, and a risk. (This is sarcasm and satire) Lastly, C.J Miles must be having an affair with Coach Corbin. Miles can do no wrong, and for some reason plays the entire 4th quarter. Corbin’s a moron, and the evaluation of Miles will be discussed in the next paragraph.

You Don’t Need Any Talent to Win! Hogwash. Analysts, coaches, and fans can argue for days as to why victories aren’t coming, but sometimes it comes down to a simple fact: Our players are not as good as the opposing teams. (Go back to the root of the problem…Management and Personnel decisions) C.J Miles: The Utah Jazz will never be a contending team with C.J. Miles as the face of the franchise. Somehow, he has become Utah’s poster child. “He’s athletic,” fans rave. “Miles can light it up,” others say. “CJ scored 40 pts. In ONE game!” still more chime in. There are kids that I play with at the “Fieldhouse” who could do what CJ Miles does for the Jazz if given the same opportunity. How hard could it be? Stand around the perimeter, maybe come off a screen, fire away anytime you touch the ball, drive to the hoop like you’re running a 40 yard dash (knocking people over), turn the ball over, and shoot 30% from three point land. Who’s the bozo who gave up Matthews, Brewer, and Korver to keep Miles? Raja Bell: Bell seems to be an emotional leader. Great job Raja, you play hard and get in opposing players heads. When Bell hits more than one jump-shot in a game, hell will freeze over. Earl Watson: He simply exists. Earl is scrappy, and will play hard, but is an all around terrible ball-player. Watson turns the ball over, makes silly decisions, and cannot score. Ronald Price:Ronnie missed 3 of 4 free-throws in the 4th quarter last night…one in which he air-balled. I haven’t seen Price hit a 3 point shot since his college days at Utah Valley. One of Ronald’s favorite things to do is run as fast as he can to the baseline, jump in the air, and throw the ball to the other team. Utah lacks talent, skill, and athleticism. Some argue that we possess determination, heart, and hustle. Oh really? Why are we the worst defensive team in the league, then? Some NBA squads are managed poorly, but contend because of coaching and talent. Other teams make great personnel moves, but are poorly coached, and thus they dwell in the cellar. Yet other clubs possess little talent, but because of great strategy and apt decision making, they compete. The Utah Jazz? Terrible at all three.

Wrap It Up Already: Please understand that this is not a denouncement of my fanship or loyalty to the Utah Jazz. Being a fan of the Jazz-bo’s runs in my family. I have cheered through thick and thin, wins and losses, and easy or tough. No, I love Utah, and will not officially “unfan” myself unless nothing is done in the offseason. To all, I bid adieux.

Coach Corbin is dumbfounded at his teams horrendous performance.

National Dessert League 2010: A Year in Review

Campus Party House Feeling Desserted

(No pun intended…….ok pun intended)

It’s over. Finished. Done. Complete. The 1st annual tournament for the National Dessert League, under the direction of commissioner Shane Thompson, has come to an end. This exciting attraction has been making every Thursday night for the past 3 months extra magical…and extra tasty. “Now what will I do with my Thursday nights?!,” exclaimed avid fan, Scott Walker. “Depression is an understatement…I hate to see it go,” remarked a teary-eyed Sydney Zaugg. Cheer up dessert lovers! Let us not be down-trodden, but rather rejoice on that which was accomplished, and reflect on the happiness in which we enjoyed. This is why we bring to you, the official National Dessert League 2010: A Year in Review

But what does it all mean, Basil? Or rather, where did it all come from? The history behind this recent craze is legendary, to say the least. What started as a ploy to capture a date with a breathtaking beauty, ended as one of the greatest weekly raves in Utah State Campus history.

The year? 2004. Campus dreamboat, Shane Thompson was residing with five other roommates in the ever so famous Pineview Apartments. Living across the hall, were 6 humans of the opposite sex, which caught the eye of the entire male apartment. Thompson was terribly handsome, charming, funny, and smart…but he was also as shy as a young boy attending his first day of pre-school. His heart longed for his neighboring crush, (one of the 6 girls across the hall) Kylee Winzler. But how could he get to know her? That’s when inspiration struck. Dessert Night. “The whole point was to ask these girls to bake a dessert for a giant competition we would be having,” explained Shane, knowing that 6 freshman girls would never deny such a request. And, so it happened. Thompson created the Dessert Tournament, baked with his cronies week 1, and invited the neighbors to bake for week 2. Each week, the number of attendees grew exponentially. By the final Dessert Night, the line stretched from the highest floor in Pineview, down the stairs, and outside onto the sidewalk, as literally hundreds of starving students wished to try one of the culinary creations. The Dessert League circa 2004 was a success, on more than one count. The love story, you ask? Shane and Kylee are now married, and reside in Tuscon, Arizona.

The Transition: Wanting to keep the legend alive, but not wanting to do it himself, Shane Thompson planted his hopes and dreams into the young impressionable mind of cousin Colton Thompson. Pre-mission (2008) Colton lacked the desire and the means of re-creating such a hit. Post-mission (current day), when Thompson had an offer to move into the “Brick House,” the stars started aligning. Now with a location, a mentor, an ambition, and 3 of the best roommates in world history, Dessert Night could be resurrected. The only difference was that this go-round was not sparked by a young filly, (Colton has yet to catch an interest in girls) but simply the yearning to create something great for the students. “It’s all about other people, and their enjoyment,” Thompson reported when asked what motivated him to bring back the league. Young Colton may have made the voting posters, but none of it could have been done without the effort, brains, and talent of close friends Kyle Hardy, Casey Staley, Scott Walker, and Colten Richens. Week in and week out, Thompson delegated instructional duties to Walker, who gladly accepted the challenge. The host house was cleaned and prepared by Staley and Richens. Arguably the greatest contributor however, was Kyle Hardy who contributed in too many ways to number. Because of Hardy’s tenure at Utah State, he had connections, and a social network unprecedented for his era. Wide-eyed students flowed in, just to see their good pal Hardy. He also had many great ideas which were implemented into the league, MC’d when needed, and constantly made announcements that couldn’t have gone without. Thank you boys…Thank you.

Oh, It Has Its Ups and Downs: The format of the league/tournament was as follows: 8 teams. 8 weeks. Each team was granted a week to prepare any dessert that their hearts desired. On game day, said dessert was eaten by 60-100 students, and thereafter voted upon. The top 4 desserts made the playoffs, which were completed in tournament form.

There were emotional highs, and emotional lows throughout the year. Everyone who attended enjoyed the music, socializing, and flirting with the opposing gender…oh and of course, the treat that was prepared. Friends were made, fun was had, and records were set. The championship witnessed record crowds, and unbelievable creativity as Leslie Brown competed against the Old Farm Klan, consisting of Lexi Brimhall, Mindy Sullivan, and Hillery Halls. The closest head to head matchup in history ended with Leslie just nubbing Old Farm with a final score of 8.19 to 8.11. During Week 3, the highest average score ever recorded occurred. “Peanut Butter Perfection,” a creation led by the skills of Kampus Korner hero Carly Barker, was an instant hit. When the judges tallied up the final score, they couldn’t believe it. “Peanut Butter Perfection” racked up an average of 9.3, blowing the previous contenders scores of 7.1 and 7.3 out of the water.

Unfortunately there is opposition in all things, and Dessert Night was no exception. At times, there were so many wild, hungry students, that nobody could move inside the house. Other times, miscommunications were had on which team was preparing the dessert. The biggest scandal however, (which could go without saying) occurred during week 2 with some extra flirtatious girls. Although their “Ooooey Goooey Goodness” cookies were clearly burned, these gals, led by Julia Williams, somehow still came out with an average score that was higher than contenders from previous weeks. How? You do the math.

It’s Too Late to Apologize

We thank you, baking lovers. Hats off to you, culinary creators. Let us give you a hand, dessert enjoyers. Without the input, feedback, and willingness to participate of the Utah State student body, none of this would ever have happened. What’s next? Steak Season ’11? Appetizer Madness USU style? Logan Idol? You tell us.

Scott Walker and Ross Pickett look alike couldn't be happier

Dunkball Ends with Boom-Bang

Staples World: July 3, 2008

Dunk Ball Association Ends with Boom-Bang
Story by Horace Heberson

There wasn’t any surprise with the two ball clubs that made it to the DBA Finals. There was a surprise, however, with the victor.

Stricken with injuries, and weak excuses, Owner/Player/Coach Colton Thompson needed to field a squad for the evening’s final series. All-Star Chad Brever was down and out with a “sore” knee. Sharp-shooter Brad Quast hasn’t been seen for weeks. Big Man Joe Roline apparently has a job. With his little man missing in action, Thompson had to come up with an alternate gameplan. “I could have found a point-guard to fill in for Chad, but he wouldn’t be able to do what Chad does for our ball club. I decided to gamble, and go with the big lineup, and hope that the only way to steal the series, would be to have the advantage on the boards.”

Thompson’s gamble paid off. Team Cardinals out-rebounded Team Rancher 50-41, and capitalized on many second-chance opportunities. When asked about his effort, Nate Warner said: “I was just trying to do my job. There is one thing that every player can do, and that is hustle. I try to make the most out of each season, each game, each play. The ball found me a couple times, and I was able to lay it up for 2.”

Team Rancher may have been out-rebounded, but they had some tricks up their sleeve as well. One was 3-point shooting. Their percentage throughout the series wasn’t what they were hoping for, but they cast enough deep balls up for plenty to drop in. Between Jace Thompson, and Jeff Brever, they cashed 11 money balls in. “I started to feel more comfortable from beyond the arc,” said Team Rancher’s Jeff Brever. “My teammates did a good job of swinging the ball, and found me for some open looks.”

Throughout the night the teams battled. The big names rose to the occasion, as Jace Thompson went off for 27, while hitting 7 from deep. Jeff Brever not only scored 32, but corralled 20 boards, dished out 5 assists, and ended the night with 8 steals. For Team Cardinals, Colton Thompson did most of the scoring….and most of the shooting. By nights end, he compiled 35 points, 18 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. When his teammates got shots off, they made the most of the opportunity. Jake Zetah hit a couple key shots from downtown, and Nate Warner played well inside for the team. The silent killer was Matt Mosack, who did a lot of things that don’t show up in the box score.

Each and every game was a nail-biter. Team Cardinals somehow came from behind to snatch game 1. It didn’t take Team Rancher to get their revenge, stealing the victory in game 2. However, games 3 and 4 belonged to Team Cardinals, and they were declared the champions of the Staples DBA 2008. “We’ll take some time away from Staples, but plan to return the league in 2 years,” said Chairman Vearl Thompson. We’ll see you in 720 days, faithful followers.
Although not apart of the big series, he did what he could to help out the league.
