Dunk Ball Association Ends with Boom-Bang
Story by Horace Heberson
There wasn’t any surprise with the two ball clubs that made it to the DBA Finals. There was a surprise, however, with the victor.
Stricken with injuries, and weak excuses, Owner/Player/Coach Colton Thompson needed to field a squad for the evening’s final series. All-Star Chad Brever was down and out with a “sore” knee. Sharp-shooter Brad Quast hasn’t been seen for weeks. Big Man Joe Roline apparently has a job. With his little man missing in action, Thompson had to come up with an alternate gameplan. “I could have found a point-guard to fill in for Chad, but he wouldn’t be able to do what Chad does for our ball club. I decided to gamble, and go with the big lineup, and hope that the only way to steal the series, would be to have the advantage on the boards.”
Thompson’s gamble paid off. Team Cardinals out-rebounded Team Rancher 50-41, and capitalized on many second-chance opportunities. When asked about his effort, Nate Warner said: “I was just trying to do my job. There is one thing that every player can do, and that is hustle. I try to make the most out of each season, each game, each play. The ball found me a couple times, and I was able to lay it up for 2.”
Team Rancher may have been out-rebounded, but they had some tricks up their sleeve as well. One was 3-point shooting. Their percentage throughout the series wasn’t what they were hoping for, but they cast enough deep balls up for plenty to drop in. Between Jace Thompson, and Jeff Brever, they cashed 11 money balls in. “I started to feel more comfortable from beyond the arc,” said Team Rancher’s Jeff Brever. “My teammates did a good job of swinging the ball, and found me for some open looks.”
Throughout the night the teams battled. The big names rose to the occasion, as Jace Thompson went off for 27, while hitting 7 from deep. Jeff Brever not only scored 32, but corralled 20 boards, dished out 5 assists, and ended the night with 8 steals. For Team Cardinals, Colton Thompson did most of the scoring….and most of the shooting. By nights end, he compiled 35 points, 18 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. When his teammates got shots off, they made the most of the opportunity. Jake Zetah hit a couple key shots from downtown, and Nate Warner played well inside for the team. The silent killer was Matt Mosack, who did a lot of things that don’t show up in the box score.
Each and every game was a nail-biter. Team Cardinals somehow came from behind to snatch game 1. It didn’t take Team Rancher to get their revenge, stealing the victory in game 2. However, games 3 and 4 belonged to Team Cardinals, and they were declared the champions of the Staples DBA 2008. “We’ll take some time away from Staples, but plan to return the league in 2 years,” said Chairman Vearl Thompson. We’ll see you in 720 days, faithful followers.
Although not apart of the big series, he did what he could to help out the league.
