Currently, I am bored on a saturday night, because nobody is in this blasted town due to spring break. It's time to get some feelings out on paper.
What is the Irony?? Here's what gets me: Officials who referee for the National Basketball Association, should obviously be more highly qualified, better, smarter, (whatever you want to call it) than collegiate refs. This just isn't the case. It is sometimes horrifying to have to sit through an entire NBA game and watch the 85 free throws that a fan must endure. I cannot for the life of me understand why these refs think they need to blow their whistle every posession.
The problem is, (as is with any profession dealing with humans) people want to feel important. In essence, you have these 60 year old bald morons, gamblers, and women running around wanting to act like they are needed. They make calls that could go without being made, act cool, "T" people up, and do a billion other things that annoy the h*** out of any normal fan. These are individuals that want to contribute, and act as if they deserve their inflated paycheck, so they make these horrendous calls. Is it a blocking foul on the defense every time down the floor? No...the defender is still moving his feet, but the offensive player is going into him as well....LET IT GO! Heaven for bid we watch 2 or 3 posessions of NBA basketball without a foul being called.
Tip to the people who need to feel special: (referees) For my sake, and every other basketball fans sake, please let 97% of fouls away from the ball slide. Please. Please. Please. Stop calling a hold on the defender, or a push-off on the offensive man. Let them play a little. No wonder wrestlers have the false notion that basketball isn't a contact sport.........because officials are making it a NON-contact sport.
Tip #2: Ignore the players falling over: The NBA players have always, and will always flop. They didn't really get pushed to the ground that hard. As a referee, just try and ignore it. I would love to see more no-calls as a fan. Everything has to either be a "block," or a "charge." Just let it go!!!! Make the players stop flopping. I watched the Nets and Jazz battle it out tonight. Horrible officiating all around. Memo to the balding man in the black pants: Just because Lucious Harris flails his arms and screams, does NOT mean that he was fouled. Are the officials even watching the game?? They only pay attention to the reactions of the superstars. Late calls are becoming more and more common. It's terrible to watch, and I'm tempted to boycott.
College Officials are Better: No doubt. I was like a retard in a room full of bouncy balls as I sat and watched Duke and North Carolina battle it out. Yes, I got to watch basketball, and not a free throw contest. My eyes were glued to the screen as I witnessed fantastic physical play, without the whistle being blown every half-second. Were there missed calls? Sure, but it was much better than calling a foul all the time. I would rather see a missed call once or twice a game, than watch players who weren't touched go to the line 15 times a game. I tip my cap to you collegiate officials.
It's all about the Superstars: Paul Milsap has yet to get a foul call, and he get's raped night in and night out. Carmelo, Lebron, Kobe, Vincanity, and Duncan get calls just by looking at the ref. (I left Iverson off the list, because that bro gets worked, and earns his points from the line) If I had one wish...it would be that NBA officials would forget about who's a star, and who's a rookie....and just call it like they see it.
Bias, Anyone? This note isn't geared against the Jazz in any way, however I was forced to write it after witnessing the terrible officiating in tonight's Jazz/Nets game. Utah gets many calls that they don't necassarily deserve. (Although, not half as many as other teams) The teams that don't complain, and that are good sports will never get calls. It happened to our intramural team at Utah State, and it happens in the NBA. We would have 5 guys that don't even talk to the refs, and would grab the ball at any time for them.....and we don't get any calls. Then you have the jerk who is dropping F-bombs at scared little Timmy Anderson, (who gets paid $5 a game to ref) getting all the calls, because Timmy is wetting his pants. Ironic, isn't it?
Fire every woman official, and replace them with the refs from the ACC.
