New Hoops League Talk of Town

New Hoops League Talk of Town

Story by Eric Hibble

You’ve probably already heard what all the fuss is about. Waiting in line at the grocery store, getting your morning coffee, or you’ve gabbed about it while receiving a pedicure. Think Staples, MN is too small to have a major sports franchise? How about 4?

The DBA (Dunk Ball Association) has widened its range, and is testing the market of rural America. As we all know, the DBA has leagues set up across the Nation, in cities such as Tuscon, Detroit, Nashville, and Chicago. Add Staples to the list. Chairman of the DBA, Vearl Thompson, says “We don’t necessarily need a change. The big city market is a great thing, but it’s always been my dream to grow big enough so we could expand our ball clubs to the little man.” That’s exactly what they’ve done, and newly appointed Staples DBA League Commissioner (Also coach and player), Colton Thompson, couldn’t be happier. “We’ve got a lot of talent around these parts, and it’s great to see it put to use. The competition level is high, and the ticket prices are low. What more could you want?”

The city of Staples has been granted 4 teams that would be funded by the DBA. The draft was held one week ago, with a good crop of talent being selected. The different squads are Team Cardinals, coached by Colton Thompson, Team Rancher, coached by Jace Thompson, Team Thug, coached by Jordan Riewer, and Team CLC, coached by Caleb Nurnberger. Official League games have already started, and they haven’t disappointed. The action has included monster jams, big-time rejections, and buzzer beating 3-pointers.

As of now, Team Thug leads the league with an impressive record of 6 and 3. One game behind them is Team Cardinals, followed by Team Rancher, and somewhere…dwelling in the cellar…you will find the lowly Team CLC. When asked about his ball clubs success, Coach Riewer said: “We prepare well, show up (to play) every night, play through arguments that distract other ballplayers (Enney), and try hard all the way until the whistle.” Coaching teams to victory isn’t Riewers only talent…playing on those same ball clubs is another. Actually, “dominating” might be the more appropriate word. After 9 games, he leads the league with a stellar 28.0 PPN (points per night), and 10.3 RPN (rebounds per night). Other notable accomplishments thus far for other players include Jace Thompson scoring 24.3 a night, Zach Koskiniemi’s 3.0 steals per night, Colton Thompson’s 3.0 blocks a night, Jordan Riewer shooting 50% from downtown, and Matt Edin casting up 59 shots in just 7 games.

Lastly, we shift our focus to Team CLC. When I sat down with team captain Nathan Rinas, he was very upbeat. “Don’t count us out of this thing. There is a lot of ball to be played yet. If we can get our big man Tiny there for each game, we have a fighting chance. Also, Caleb needs to shoot more, I should take more 3’s, and for heavens sake, let’s get some team chemistry. As of right now, we’re a terrible ball club.”

So there you have it. There are tons more games to be played, and for the local fans…every game is a home game! Pick a team to cheer for, get out there, and support their new league. Until next weeks edition, buy some tickets.
